There are quite a few manga/manwa that are category "defiers", one that fits into this class is: 6u4y5

Mature/Adult: Nana to Kaoru Bayasian average 8.7

While Amazume Ryuta's sexually based work is certainly not to everyone's taste, he is a superb story teller and fantastic artist. It's easy for some to write Nana and Kaoru off because of it's S&M based storyline, but the developing relationship between the two protagonists is one of the most thoughtful, interesting and to some extent believable that I've come across in any manga.

...and just so you know my mind is not totally in the gutter:

Romance: Skip Beat Bayasian average: 9.07

Light comedy and romance are nicely integrated in this long running series. It's taken a slightly darker turn with the latest scanlations, but overall it's plot twists and turns and the long simmering relationship between the lead characters continue to keep things fresh. A strong popular manga with a dedicated fan base.

One that doesn't have a high average, but should is...

Slice of Life: Tomehane! (8.0 Average)

If this was the academy awards, this would be the sleeper that comes up to take the trophy. Given it's unusual subject matter (caligraphy), I'm quite sure a lot of people just skipped over this one, but the detail and writing and artwork make this one of the most compelling reads I've come across. Not to be missed imho. "Nominated for best manga at the first two Manga Taisho" (BU).

does shoujo also count for a category? if then, then I'm nominating:
shoujo: Mars and Kare Kano
school life shoujo: Ouran High School Host Club.

if they don't count, then please tell me so that i can edit my reply to this thread 😛

My nominations are...

Dengeki Daisy- Romance I guess... it's a lot more than just romance, there's some mystery in it to but on the whole I think it would fit into the romance category best. The story is very well fleshed out and the characters are well rounded and just the whole thing is so good! It was one of my first manga's and one of my favorites!

Nabi- Not quite sure where this would fit in, probably adventure. The story is serene and yet with a sense of foreboding. The relationships are wonderful and the plot amazing and the art is a plus to, beautiful!

Olimpos- Psychological, definitely. While the story is told in a very different fashion that some may not enjoy, the plot in itself is VERY deep, and you really have to be thinking about what EVERYONE is saying! It's pretty amazing... and interesting.

Nabari no Ou- Not really sure where to place this one... it has a lot of elements but isn't really classifiable in any of the specific genre's listed... maybe adventure... maybe... The manga's amazing, the plot is unique enough but it's the characters and their relationships that hold the story. These characters, unique enough on their own, together make the best cast, whenever I think back on them it's fondly. I absolutely love this manga! It's one of my favorites!

Seconding...

Shiki- Second for mystery, though it would also fit into the horror category... maybe even better.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée- Second for historic.

Fullmetal Alchemist- Second for adventure

Pandora Hearts- Second! Second! SECOND! Definitely, this manga is probably THE BEST!

Disagree with:

Kanata Kara- Romance. It... it doesn't really fit... the romance was sweet and all but nothing really amazing or well done.
