After many disappointing attempts at finding something to watch with the new lineups I have decided to wander back to the past. I'm looking for some older stuff to watch. Preferably from the 80s and 90s. Something about that grittier art style and plots just make me happy. 3v35v
I like things like Slayers and Bubblegum Crisis. (bright colors make me happy) but just toss what stuff you like from the era. I watch pretty much anything. =p

Maybe The Vision of Escaflowne (天空のエスカフローネ)? It's a late 90's Anime classical, not too long and has Mecha's set up in a fantasy-like world. Lol.
"It's like love is a bonus in your life. Even without it, I'm just fine. I don't feel like pointlessly searching for it. You don't have to make yourself unhappy." (Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji)
"Why does it rain?" - "To create drama." (Drops (Andou Yuki))

90's anime:
Tenchi Muyo!
Dragon Ball
Rurouni Kenshin
Cowboy Beebop
Sailor moon
Gundam
Inuyasha (1996-2008)
Also I recommend History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi! Though it's in the 2000's, one of my favorites.
Like Slayers, maybe Magic Knight Rayearth. Or Guru guru if you want a flashy parody of RPG and fantasy. More similar to Bubblegum Crisis only the Burn up! series comes to mind.
And if we're talking about 90's Neon Genesis Evangelion is a must.
What I like in Trivial Pursuit style. Pick your category:

Patlabor tv series
You're Under Arrest (this one has several seasons actually)
Ah! My Goddess OVA's (they're actually pretty good)
Here is Greenwood OVA
Dragon Ball (there's a reason why it's so popular)
Neo Ranga (Seriously underrated)
Cardcaptor Sakura (trust me, it's good)
SDF Macross (this one is kind of neccesary)
Macross 7 (lots of people will tell you it's terrible, and maybe it is. I'm just saying give it a try)
Macross Plus OVA (really, really good)
New Dominion Tank Police
Red Baron
Dirty Pair
Blue Submarine No. 6
The Legend of Black Heaven
Serial Experiments Lain (no one has mentioned this yet
😔 )
Excel Saga
Infinte Ryvius
personally I believe the golden age of anime was a period starting in the 90's in to the early 00's. I think it's needless to say that period is long over.

Utena*
I totally forgot about Revolutionary Girl Utena. Freaking love this show. Especially love the music. It's crazy balls.
Also, just like everyone else says, if you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop, do so immediately. And if you have seen it, watch the english dub since it is one of those extremely rare occassions where it is better than the original. Not to disparage the original VA's, but the english VA's were dialed into it up to 11.
As for movies that haven't been mentioned try Patlabor movies 1 and 2.
And, this is probably the last you'll hear of me in this thread, so I'll just mention The Twelve Kingdoms even though it's from 2002. It takes longer than most shows to really pick up so you'll have to watch more than just three or four episodes to give it a chance. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
This request thread is also oddly void of Outlaw Star. 😕

I thought I wasn't going to post anymore, but I just ed the Appleseed OVA. I still insist that it's the best animated version of Appleseed.
a few more:
A Kite
Mezzo Forte
Both of these have several versions some with adult scenes and others with none. Of note is Mezzo Forte's international release with about twenty new minutes of footage.
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
