After 10 years of putting it off, I finally converted the site to UTF-8. There are no doubt still issues to work out, and I'd appreciate if you could reply to this thread or post bug reports in the suggestions forum if you find one. This will lead to better things to come! ?

Like above said it gives this error: "Please refine you query."

It gives this same error when you want to open group convos too.

If the site wasn't UTF-8 before, then how did you manage to display CJK characters?

We used htmlentities(). It converted them into "〹" This mostly worked, but didn't work with everything. Converting to UTF-8 consisted of converting all the database tables to UTF-8, then running a script to convert those entities to the appropriate UTF-8 character.

what does that mean for us?

Generally it means you can use the full unicode set ... among other things this means emoji: https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html ?
